Well, my real name is Dave Peterson- but ever since
college, people have called me "Peterman." We may have met in the
past when I was "Wiffleball Coordinator" at Pilgrim Day Camp in
Framingham, "Prize Wheel and Bullhorn Guy" at 104.5 WXLO in
Worcester, or the "Rally Dance Initiator" with the Worcester
Tornadoes Baseball Team. I'm currently working as a Brand Strategist for
smith&jones Idea Agency in Sturbridge. That's right! I help companies with
their marketing, advertising and promotional ideas.
Even though I'm responsible for coming up with new ideas
for my clients now, I had NO idea what was happening to me in the fall of 2008.
I had lost 25 pounds without trying, was constantly thirsty, and I had
absolutely no energy. When I finally went to the hospital, the doctors found my
blood sugar to be 760. Any higher, they said, and I could've slipped into a
coma. The blood sugar of a normal person is between 80 and 120. So, I was
diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes- a condition in which my pancreas fails to
produce the insulin needed to convert sugar from carbohydrates into energy.
I have no family history of the disease, but I am
dedicating my efforts to finding a cure for it so that future generations don't
have to deal with it. I now wear an insulin pump to help control the amount of
insulin in my bloodstream.
Walk This Way!
The date is October 1st, 2011 at UMass Medical School in
Worcester, MA. I am walking and raising funds for the American Diabetes
Association's signature fundraising walk, Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes.
Every step I take and every dollar I raise will make a difference in the lives
of 23.6 million Americans living with diabetes. By making a donation on my
