History of the White Drum Restaurant:

The history of the White Drum Restaurant really started when Evelyn Shovan opened a waffle shop at the intersection of then Route 2 (now Rte. 2A) and Route 78. The building burned down around 1933 and was rebuilt as the White Drum in 1935/36. The restaurant was run by Shovan and later her son, Stephen, until 1970, when it was sold to Robert and James Minichiello. Robert was manager, his wife, Lorraine, was hostess, and James was chef. In 1975, The Drum and Chef James' culinary skills were featured in a segment of "The Elder American" television program for channel 27. That same year, Boston Globe food and wine critic Anthony Spinazzola gave the restaurant three stars in his "Let's Eat Out" column. The Minichiello's ran The Drum until 1976. Currently, it is an Asian food restaurant.

About the Minute Tapioca plant:

Minute Tapioca began as the Whitman Grocery Co. on Water Street and was moved to 131 West Main St. in 1902. The name changed to Minute Tapioca in 1908. General Foods bought the company in 1926 and moved out of Orange in 1966/67.
